After defeating him, he will recognize you and remembers that you helped him back in the forest. He unnecessarily attacks you for this, which means you'll have to fight back. You will meet him again in the future, after destroying the pots in his lair. After doing so, he will let you leave the forest and continue your adventure. You will first meet him in the past at the Haunted Forest, where he wants you to get rid of 6 ghosts.
